Brookside’s locally owned Carmen’s Café is planning a second location in Leawood.
The new restaurant is scheduled to open by late March in Park Place, 117th Street and Nall Avenue.
“I’ve been in the restaurant business for 20 years; it’s all I know,” said Juan Bautista, owner of Carmen’s with his brother Francisco Bautista. They named the restaurant after their mother.
Carmen’s opened more than a decade ago at 6307 Brookside Plaza, later expanding with another dining area and kitchen on the second floor, and becoming a neighborhood mainstay.
It offers Italian cuisine with Latin flair — small plates of tapas to share such as shrimp and crabmeat stuffed artichokes, spicy empanadas, or steamed mussels topped with Diablo sauce, along with fresh seafood, pasta, veal, chicken or beef entrees.
